Troy Peters was born in 1969 in Greenock, Scotland, of American parents. His work as a composer ranges from orchestral and chamber music to a large body of songs and an opera for hand puppets. Among his honors are the Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Meet the Composer grant, a Rockefeller Foundation grant, the Victor Herbert and Devora Nadworney Awards from the National Federation of Music Clubs, the Kavanagh Composition Award from the Delaware County Youth Orchestra, and several ASCAP Standard Panel Awards. He is a graduate of The Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied with Ned Rorem, and holds a Master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied composition with George Crumb, James Primosch, Jay Reise and Richard Wernick.

Peters is also the Music Director and Conductor of the Vermont Youth Orchestra and the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Pacific Chamber Soloists. He is a staff conductor at the Evergreen Music Festival in Olympia, Washington. He formerly served as the Artistic Director of Perpetuum Mobile, a Philadelphia-based new music ensemble, and as the Assistant Conductor of both the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra and the Tacoma Youth Symphony. While at Curtis, Peters studied conducting with David Hayes.
